SkinPen Microneedling FAQs
What can microneedling be used to treat?
«SkinPen microneedling can be used to improve the appearance of a wide range of conditions including:
- acne scarring
- surgical scarring
- chicken pox scars
- uneven pigmentation caused by conditions such as melasma, vitiligo and age spots.
- fine lines and wrinkles
- stretch marks
- sagging skin.
Is microneedling painful?
«We will apply a numbing gel to the area to be treated, which will make the treatment comfortable. You may still feel some slight discomfort in certain areas such as the brow or upper lip, but speak to your therapist about this who will be able to reassure you.
How does microneedling work?
«Microneedling stimulates the body's natural healing processes, causing your skin to produce more collagen and elastin. Your trained skin care professional uses a handheld device to create hundreds of microscopic injuries over the treatment area.
As your body responds and heals these injuries, the collagen and elastin it produces generates new skin cells. This results in your skin becoming plumper and smoother following the treatment.
The tiny injuries caused by the treatment also allow for better absorption of skin care products applied after the treatment, further enhancing the benefits.
Is there any downtime after a microneedling treatment?
«No downtime is required and you will be able to go about your day. However, immediately after treatment, you skin will be red, as if you have moderate sunburn. This usually subsides within a couple of hours.
Is microneedling suitable for everyone?
«Microneedling is suitable for most skin types. There are some people however, who should avoid it. Microneedling will not be suitable for you if:
- You have active acne or are taking medication for acne including Roaccutane
- You are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy or have received this treatment within the last year
- You have a current outbreak of cold sores (herpes) or other skin infection in the treatment area
- You are pregnant or breast feeding
- You have a history of poor wound healing including keloidal tendency (skin forming hard scars).
We will carry out a full consultation with you ahead of your treatment, including covering your medical history, to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for microneedling.
