Effective Treatments For Chronic Migraines Using Botox®

Migraine treatments Winchester ClinicMigraines tend to be quite common, but chronic migraines can be defined as headaches which occur at least 15 days a month, of which half have migrainous features such as a throbbing head, nausea and disturbed vision.

Chronic migraine is a condition with many underlying causes, and it can be triggered by factors such as poor posture, an imbalanced diet and work stress.  If you don’t know what is causing yours, it’s important to visit your doctor to find out about the causes and treatment options open to you.

Some adults living with chronic migraines can find relief from their symptoms with Botox® injections, available at our Winchester aesthetics clinic.

Using Botox® to Treat Chronic Migraines

Botox® is proven to effectively treat chronic migraines and it was licensed for this in 2010 by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).  It’s important to note that it has not yet been proven to relieve any other headache types such as tension headaches or cluster headaches, so you need to check that what you suffer from is chronic migraine before you book your treatment.

In trials, patients who suffered from migraines were given injections every 12 weeks for just over a year.  Halfway through the treatment, patients treated with Botox averaged 8 less days of suffering from headaches every month than the control group.  At the end of the testing period, 70% of the treatment group had half the number of headaches, with no serious side effects being reported.

How Does Botox® Relieve Migraines?

Current research suggests that the botulinum toxin found in Botox acts as a barrier to sensory pathways which are known to cause the headache phase of migraine attacks.

The treatments we provide at Sparx are provided by Dr Chris Airey, who is a fully registered doctor with the GMC (General Medical Council). He will usually administer Botox injections every 12 weeks for migraines.  This is because the response to treatment is most reliable over this time period.
